I read a great blog today by Katie Freiling about getting more work done in less time.  Wow!  What a great tip she had for us!

Katie talked about Parkinson’s Law.  I have never heard of it, and wondered what a law related to Parkinson’s disease had to do with business!

Well, come to find out, nothing!  Parkinson’s Law states that “Work will expand so as to fill the amount of time available for its completion.”  That really made me stop and think.

I don’t know about you, but I really suffer from this kind of “Parkinson’s disease!”  I can take all day to do something that should only take a little while, just because I have all day sometimes, and then I wonder how in the world I will get anything done when my son goes back to school next week (we homeschool, and he starts high school)!

Well, now I know how I will get things done – I will apply Parkinson’s law to my day, only allotting a small time frame in which to get some things done.  We will see how that works out for us!

How Do I Get Started With Affiliate Marketing?

So, what is the first step in getting started with affiliate marketing?  What do you need to do?

The first step, in my opinion, is to get some good training so that you know what you are doing.  If you do not get good training, you can try to do things the way you think they should be done, and go through a lot of trial and error.  And you don’t really want to have a lot of error, do you?  That can be costly, and it definitely will be time-wasting.

So find someone who can teach you the ins and outs of affiliate marketing, someone who will walk you through step by step, so that you can make a minimum of errors and start making money faster.

There are a myriad of articles, ebooks, and training programs on the internet that can teach you how to get started.  So how do you know which one to pick?  How do you know the good from the bad, the mediocre from the scams?

The Best Way

The best way is to find someone you trust who can lead you to someone who is doing well in affiliate marketing and who does well at teaching it to others.  There may be many good teachers out there, but the one that I know about, who does an excellent job teaching others, is my buddy, Vick.

Vick wrote a couple of articles on my blog here recently, and I am learning a lot from him.  His teaching style is the best that I have seen.  His training videos are short, excellent quality, and very informative.  He and his team tell you everything you need to know.  When something isn’t working well anymore, he makes changes to help you be successful.

And his webinars are fun.  You really feel like you are in a community when you are watching one of his webinars.  You can interact with others in the webinar, not just the leader.

Many people desire to make fast money online. There are quite a few ways to do this. One very popular way to do this is by product review. The product may range from health and beauty items to personal fitness. It also may be something simple, like signing up for a website membership. After reviewing the product, a survey is taken that may take only a few minutes. Payment is then usually received within a few weeks.

Surveys are another way to make fast money online. Aside from reviewing products, you may be asked to do just general surveys according to certain specifications. These surveys may be sent to you because of your background, age, sex or a variety of other aspects. Many times surveys are based on the personal interests of people, and allow web sites and others to reach a wider range of people by reviewing their product based on what is said in their surveys. Surveys pay well depending on the topic, and payment is received within a few weeks or within a month.

Another way to make fast money online is to sell things. You can sell just about anything, but many people chose items that they are not using or do not need. These items are typically found around their home and can range in type. Some items that can be sold include CDs, video games, appliances, sporting goods, and even furniture such as lamps, bookcases, dressers, and more. If you are selling these items from a site, the website takes a portion of the money you sold the item for, usually a small percentage. Payment is received within a few days.

One final way that you can make fast money online is to become a content writer. This content will be displayed on the web site that employs you. Content must be completely unique and thus not plagiarized in any way. Writers can write many different types of articles, such as how-to articles, product reviews or general articles. These articles usually require the writer to include one or more keyword that is the subject of the article. Payment is based about how many words are in the article and the quality of the content. Payment is usually received within one week.

Keep that in mind.

Many people don’t mind spending a year to make their online money making system work. To them, that’s fast. In a brick and mortar business, it may take years to see actual profit. This is not necessarily so with an online business. If you keep working at it, it is possible to make it successful in 12 months or less. But you must stay consistent. Another thing to consider is how much cash is the person talking about? Is it anywhere from $5 to $10? What if it’s simply ten cents? This is where this term can get very tricky. Yes, that money is indeed fast cash online, since it was made online very quickly. But is that the amount that you really thought you were going to get?

Even if it starts out as a very small amount, there is always room for improvement when trying to make money online. If you take the time to work with what you have, you’ll find yourself pulling in money left and right before you know it. The one thing that we always forget as humans is time flies. Not just when you’re having fun, but when you’re doing anything. Those little tweaks that you’re making to your business right now will seem like ancient history in 3 to 6 months. You really will refer to it as “a long time ago.” You will have done so many things in that period of time, that it will more than likely seem like it.

Here’s more affiliate program information for you that I promised in my last blog.

Okay, last time we covered some of the necessary but boring affiliate programs that can bring in good residual income.  But you want something a little more exciting, right?

There are a TON of affiliate programs out there, and I haven’t even scratched the surface in my own research!

One of the most well-known and used affiliate program sites is ClickBank.  Some of you may be very familiar with ClickBank, and others of you may be wondering what I am talking about.  So for those of you in the dark, ClickBank is a website where you can sign up for free, pick a category in their marketplace, chose a product they have for sale, and then market it yourself for 50-70% commissions.

If you can find some free or cheap places to advertise, this is a very inexpensive way to go, but there are some tricks to picking the right products and choosing where to market them.  If you sign up for my free newsletter on the right, you can learn these secrets and start making money.

Also, if you do a search for affiliate programs, you can find a lot of places that offer to let you be an affiliate.  In fact, the more you learn about affiliate programs, the more places you will notice that offer them!

More Dirt on Affiliate Programs, Part 1

You’re going to talk about affiliate programs again?  Yes, I am!  And do you know why?  It is because there is a lot of money to be made from affiliate programs, and I feel you should know more about them.

Affiliate Programs, Part 1

Today, I am going to focus on one kind of affiliate programs – those that are not real exciting, but people need and use.  These can bring in monthly or yearly residual income.

Everyone doing business online needs to have one or more domain names.  If you can catch them before they start their business and recommend a place to go to get their domain names, you can get commissions every time they sign up for a new name.  You just have to sign up for the affiliate program the company has, and then whenever you send someone there, and they buy, you will get a commission.  As you may already know, you have to renew your domain name from time to time, and so will your customers.  If you can get a commission from them every time, it will give you repeated income.

Now granted, domain names are not big money-makers.  However, when they are all added together, and if you can bring in new customers on a regular basis, it can add up.

Another place to make good commissions from boring affiliates is your autoresponder host.  You can become an affiliate of that, too, and then you will get a MONTHLY residual income.  Anyone who wants to use an autoresponder list, or who wants to write their own autoresponders, needs to be a member of an autoresponder company.  These companies charge a monthly fee to use their service.  So anyone you can get to sign up will bring you a monthly commission.  Get enough people buying, and you can have a pretty good monthly income, especially if you can keep getting new sign-ups!

Are Free Classified Ads Really Worth It?

You may ask if free classified ads are worth running.  My opinion is. . . it depends.

I know that may not be very helpful, but here is what I have learned so far.

Free Classified Ads – Do I or Don’t I?

If you need a quick, easy way to place classified ads with little or no money, it is a good place to start to get the experience with ad writing and/or placing.

But as a way to make a lot of money fast, don’t expect that to happen!  Not unless you are a marketing guru who is also a copywriting guru.

From what I understand about free classifieds, you would need to have hundreds of ads placed to really expect to make money from them.  And finding enough sources to place that many ads would take a lot of work.  In my opinion, your time would be better spent in other areas that would bring in more traffic.

You would also have to place many different ads, due to the fact that many would have to be placed in each publication.  At least some of the publications won’t let you run more than one ad with the same headline, even if it is a different category.  So you have to have variety.

And when all is said and done, you may get some clicks on the ad itself, but don’t expect much response – not too many will actually click on your web link, let alone buy.  If they are looking in the free classifieds, they probably are the kind of people who don’t want to spend money on what you have to sell.  Once again, just my personal opinion.

So bottom line is:  If you want to give it a try, go ahead – it won’t cost you anything but a little time.  It will give you good experience, and who knows, maybe you will do better than I have been able to do!  If so, I would love to hear from you!

What’s the Difference Between Features and Benefits?

If you are anything like I was a few months ago, you didn’t even know there was a difference between features and benefits.  They may seem like the same thing to you.

Is there really a difference?  And if so, what?

The Difference Between Features and Benefits

The difference between features and benefits is this:

  • Features are things that the product or service has or does, and
  • Benefits are things that the product or service does for you.

Let me illustrate this for you.  You want to buy a car.  You look at the classified ads in the paper (I know, I’m dating myself, but bear with me here).  The classifieds list the bare bones – year, make, model, sedan, a/c, fwd [front wheel drive], pw/l [power windows and locks], mileage [if used], automatic, price, etc.  These are the features.

The reason the classified ads put in just the features, and in such abbreviated form, is because one pays by the word for these ads.  They want to get you interested in the car because it is the kind of car you want and has the features you are looking for.  But that doesn’t make you want to buy the car, it just tells you to go look at it because it has the features you want.

When you see the car and test drive it, what will make you want to buy the car is if it drives nicely and comfortably, is the color you like, doesn’t need any or much work, and is in good condition (looks nice).  You will like the way it makes you feel, and you will like the way it makes you look when you drive it (it will impress your friends and family).

So, as you can see, the features tell you what the car has, and the benefits tell you what the car will do for you – comfort, look good, little or no work, etc.

What Does That Mean for My Business?

Now, to put this in perspective for the network marketer, you need to try to sell your prospects on your product or service’s benefits, not its features.

How do you do that?  Well, will the product help them to solve a problem they are having with their business?  Will it help them get out of their financial difficulties?  Will it lessen their pain?  Will it help them quit their job?  Will it help them pay their mortgage or rent?  Will it free up their time to be with their family and/or travel?  If you can help them solve their problems, or make them feel better about themselves,  that is what you need to sell them on.  Not the features.

Benefits speak to the heart and features to the head.  So if you can touch their heart, you are more likely to sell them your product or service.

Why Won’t My Contacts Buy From Me?

Do you have a website and autoresponders set up, but just aren’t getting the business you would like to be getting?

There may be several reasons for this.  You may want to research to find out why, or just try to do things differently and see if that changes things around.

How to Get Contacts to Become Customers

One of the ways to get your contacts to become customers is to be generous.  Give them lots of good information that they can use.

But you have to be careful not to give too much information to them, or they will have no need to buy anything from you.

According to Starr Hall at the Entrepreneur website, you need to have a 3/3 Rule.  This says that if you are approached three times by a contact for free information or answers to questions, you need to politely request that they purchase one of your products that will answer their questions for them.  Go ahead and give them the information they want the first two times, but not the third.

Make sure that you build a relationship with the contact before you make a sales pitch to them.  A sales pitch right away will turn people away who may be really needing or wanting what you have to sell.

And last of all, just be yourself.  If you try to put on a false persona to try to impress someone, they will see through you and will be turned off.  But if you will just be yourself, you will come across as genuine, and people will be more likely to trust you.
